I have been likewise bitten.

The core C-code of gnetlist uses "POWER" as a magic place-holder refdes
to stop it complaining about power-rail symbols. I was pretty amazed
when I discovered this myself, in a similar "WTF" moment.

I've not been working on gEDA recently (devoting my free cycles to PCB
when I get them), so did not have time to do more than work around my
issue.

Regards,
