Ok, there is room for improvement :-) From work flow perspective, a 3D 
representation of the board asgiven in the outline layer is more 
import than population with components.

This should go into an attribute in the preamble of the *.pcb file.

I'd say, the default install should at least contain a reasonable 
library of models to get a newbie started. Models should be high 
quality, so they can serve as a pattern for more.
Of course, the same reasoning applies to footprints and symbols. IMHO, 
the rather large default library is a strong selling point in favor of 
eagle. Unfortunately, geda is not particularily strong at this aspect. 
The default set of geda symbols is (intentionly) not ready for use. 

Shameless plug: 
I am still working on a library of symbols and footprints that 
complies with the above requirements -- the "essential" library.
If the openscad exporter turns out to be usable, I will add 3D models 
to the essential footprints.
