Using CAIRO_OPERATOR_DIFFERENCE might give an acceptable replacement:

What I will miss is the speed of the fast renderers. That's where you see
the tremendous overhead that Cairo rendering implies. This said I've never
found a measurable performance difference between "Normal" and "High quality".
