Hello. The problem happens whether I manually delete the contents of the 
search field, or if I use the broom button.

In either case, the same effect: it's as if the search routine goes on a 
hunt for a null string, and ties the CPU up completely.

I believe the version of the gEDA package I'm using is what's currently 
supplied for Ubuntu 12.04. Luckily I can work around it :)
