Indeed not, The SP200 cartridges are physical larger, and have two discrete pins inside the barrel. Their operation frequency is approx 500kHz IIRC. The MX500 has a slightly smaller cartridge, with a coaxial connection at the end to the heating element. Its operation frequency is in the MHz (or 10s of MHz?) range, which may be why they need a different connection type. At the iron, the SP200 has a multi-pin DIN connection with a twist lock action. The MX500 has an F-type connector. Personally, I use the SP200 for most work, but the MX500 has finer tips available for it. There might be better options out there for small SMD work. -- Peter Clifton <peter DOT clifton AT clifton-electronics DOT co DOT uk> Clifton Electronics
