FWIW, the code is ready and usable - except that my prototype ended up
using a different mechanism for identifying the new "mask" drawing layers,
to what will eventually be used upstream.

If you're happy to create design files which might need a manual tweak when
the "official" version gets completed, I could point you towards a branch
in my repository which I know a few people use.
