For monochrome PNGs, I do something like this (from my film script):
sys("pcb -x png --dpi $dpi --outfile $base.tmp --png-bloat ${bloat}mil --monochrome --fill-holes --as-shown --layer-stack $layers,pins,vias$solderside $pcb");
then pamflip it where needed.
