I don't think CPU and code tuning is relevant, as most of the time is
taken by I/O.

If you want to compare "dir /s/b" with something, compare it with
"ls -R". You cannot meaningfully compare it with 'find', since the
latter is not meant to just show the file names.

That's a significant difference. I doubt that it could be explained
by testing for symlinks, but if that's the reason, symlink support
needs some serious optimization before it can be considered ready for
prime time, IMO.
