How did it fail?

What version of autoconf & automake does the package require? You can find
this out by looking for version numbers in AC_PREREQ and AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE in
configure.in or configure.ac (the new name for configure.in).

I don't see why any of the changes to config.site are needed. I think I need
to know more about the problem.
