NT doesn't emulate the SFT.  We will need some fallback (and a method to 
detect the lack of SFT support to go with it).  One possible way of 
detecting this problem is used by `fstat'.

I have some limited access to an NT box, so if you send a source, I can 
compile it and run some tests on NT.
