Yep - this is definitely it.

I tried using stock gcc 2.7.2.1 with a variety of optimization options
and with and without -m486 just to make sure that it never happens.
It would be worthwhile to try gcc 2.8 with the new -m options (I think it
support pentium and pentiumpro) and make sure that doesn't cause a
problem. I sent off the info to the gnu.utils list and to Ian
to see if they know if its a problem with gas or not.
