At the risk of prolonging the debate, I wonder if it would be possible to write a library that would allow you to call the Windows functions to access the COM ports (cf libsocket for accessing the Windows Winsock functions at http://www.phekda.freeserve.co.uk/richdawe/lsck/lsck.htm) thus enabling a DOS box to use the Windows functions in a similar manner as Windows programs.
