Well, as a matter of fact, there's a new freeware (GNU - license) UNIX
rewrite (NOT port of the AT&T code, so it can be made available), called
LINUX. A beta is out right now; the next version (1.0) will include
streams, etc., making it more generally useful, and the current
version allows program development under gcc. If you're interested in using
a real operating system instead of a piggybacked one, that may be the
direction to go in.
