Well, all I know is that I cannot execute a script on Cygwin unless the 
execute bit is set. In order not to be bothered by Windows files I created a 
separate directory, /home/<id>, set $HOME to this value, and also put it in 
/etc/passwd.

Or, could you remove yourself from those other groups that give you the 
execute ability?

I assume you're not on a fat* disk.
