I guess I should have used another word instead of difficult, such as
laborious.  If there are many calls to mbstowcs() in the Python 3.0 code
base, then many patches like the following will be required:

    http://bugs.python.org/file11186/cygwin-mbstowcs.patch

Note that I haven't grep-ed through the code yet, which is why I
indicated "possibly" above.

BTW, did you succeed in get Python 3.0 to run under Cygwin 1.5?
