Well, that spoils the theory that the problem is related to
some weird console problem on 9x. I guess it's just a general
problem on 9x. ;-)
TERM is indeed set to 'cygwin' under command.com/cmd.exe and
'rxvt' for rxvt. My question was, which one of these two
programs were you using. You've answered that (i.e. both).
