I have just updated cygwin. This version should fix the "tar to a tape problem", the "readlink" problem, and adds some diagnostic output if pid scanning for something like 'ps' fails. It also will recognize that an 'a.out' produced by gcc is executable. And, as a bonus, it again identifies itself as version 1.1.5.
