All alike, or different?  If they're different, the trick is to keep
track of the wordings - there's only 12 of them.  If they're alike,
the trick is to make then different by dropping things in each room.
I don't see what this has to do with cygwin, though.

Shouldn't.  I've been building cygwin1.dll every day (well, last week
at least), and I just install the new dll.  Make works fine.  Have you
tried running strace?  It's going to produce a *huge* file (due to
child programs) but it might be worth a clue or two.
