OK, I (finally) see what the real issue is.  IMHO, since Cygwin specially
handles names like /dev/null and /dev/tty already, I see no reason why it
shouldn't specially handle names like AUX, PRN, ...

Noel -
  You're missing the point. It's not the uppercase/lowercase/mixed-case
problem. It's *ILLEGAL* names like AUX, PRN, etc. Go ahead, if you want
to hang your system, create a file called 'aux' using cygwin, and then
try to access it using explorer (if you get that far)...
