Subject: Serial Class for g++?

I'm investigating writing a program which requires use of serial
communications. Before I re-invent the wheel; Has anyone written a serial
class for g++ that they are willing to share? If not, Is there a good
on-line source for how to communicate with the uart? A recommended book?
Thanks in advance.
