I'm using patch 2.5 on a Slackware 3.4 & linux 2.0.34 system. I follow the *exact* instructions given; untar the egcs release, change to that directory and try to apply the patch. I see loads and loads of data scroll by in the familiar incomprehensible diff style. Then, I'm asked "File to patch: ". I don't actually know; there may be dozens and dozens of files to be patched. I simply press return, and patch asks me "ignore patch" (or something very similar) and I press "y" to ignore it. Patch then stops. Checking for any .rej and ..orig files I find two in the subdirectory "etc" of the egcs tree, but no others. So, what's going on here? What is *supposed* to happen? I've tried unzipping the patch *first*, and then applying it, but then gunzip fails saying the format of the file is not correct. How can it fail now, but still worked when I use the "gunzip
