The recent stable 1.2.3 release of pcb-rnd and current svn development
version of pcb-rnd include the ability to use PCB layout files as
libraries which can serve as a source of footprint elements for
insertion into new layouts or designs.

Screenshots show examples with pcb-rnd's native lihata (.lht) file
format, as well as the original gEDA PCB (.pcb) file format, being
used as a source of footprint elements:

This functionality extends to any supported file format.

This is likely to be of use in multi-seat labs or organisations
managing version controlled repositories of footprints, as well as
facilitating the distribution and use of large collections of
footprint elements.

Testing of other supported file formats would be appreciated,
including Eagle XML and Kicad board layouts, so that any corner cases
can be identified and sorted out.
