I think the fact that we're harassing a user because he wants to help
us and we don't want to listen, is a big part of the problem.

Just because some of our users may be hostile doesn't mean we should
treat all our users as hostile.  Even when trying to get users to do
things they don't want to do, we must still strive to be polite and
understanding.
