The identifiers used in the XML format are only unique within a file, as a 
way of referencing the symbol or pixmap definition from the object which 
instantiates it.  Globally unique identifiers are an entirely different 
thing.

The XML file format doesn't change anything about the way gEDA finds 
files--symbol files are still referenced by basename, and pixmap by paths 
relative to the location of the schematic file (though gschem always 
specifies absolute pixmaps paths).
