A version bump to the end of gtk2 makes sense but gtk3 feels premature. gtk3 has its detractors because of what happened with GNOME3 and GIMP. gtk grew out of the need to make gimp and even the gimp people seem to be having trouble with them now. I am not saying dump gtk, just that this might not be the best use of our time right now. Igor2 is off working on something using SDL because it is maintained but has a slower release cycle.
