A quick grep through the source of current git head does not reveal the 
variables this patch introduced. So most probably has not been merged in 
the repo. The bug bug report does not mention a commit either. Given its 
age (2008), the patch is likely a bit bit rotten by now.

Is the general idea of the patch solid? Or should it be dismissed because 
of some severe flaw?
