If something is stripping the attribute then you must have an error in its definition. S. I just opened your sym file and could not find a "source=" attribute anywhere in the file. If something is stripping the attribute then you must have an error in its definition.

I have that in gafrc. I also tried putting symbol and sch in same directory as top level schematic and on second scenario used a separate directory (all in one place) to test it.
