The chips work well with OpenOCD and GNU tools. The AVR family had good GCC support in WinAVR until Atmel took it internal. >I'm too busy to waste time with Windows. Most everyone doing real work, except management and IT at companies would agree with your Windows assessment. Most of us don't use Windows by choice but by edict from on-high. (Resume anyone?) > 3. Example code is pure lasagna, thoroughly obfuscating the hardware/software relationships. Atmel example code is frequently just plain wrong. > 4. Documentation is a mashup. One would think that in the 21st century, processor manuals could include relevant details (like register addresses) where they are needed (as they did in the 1960's), but Atmel can't seem to manage real automated document generation. Most of the documentation starts in Russian for AVR's, and in the past French for the ARM's, I don't know who is doing it since Atmel France closed. The poor translation to English shows frequently. In the past you could get data sheets well in advance for the AVRs at http://www.atmel.ru , alas they now redirect you based on your region. I really hate sites that think they know better than give me what I asked for.
