I can see this being something that would be really useful integrated with a version control system (eg git) or project management system (eg Redmine). The translucent lines threw me off for a minute (it seemed a little distracting) but I can see that they would be useful for showing all the true segments of a footprint. Maybe you could make a toggle option for the transparency. The transparency and colours would probably also be very useful for integration with version control systems to implement a visual diff. I look forward to seeing where you go with this. Will you be releasing the project as open source?
