The stuff built at work is rated to 175C.  It gets soldered with SN96 
whose melting point is 225C (I had to look it up :) - When using smt 
soldering tips, there's just not enough thermal mass so if using lower 
temperatures on the iron, you never get the solder to flow. 800F seems 
works pretty well - it melts the solder nicely, and doesn't destroy the 
pcb.  For larger iron tips, I've gotten away with slightly lower 
temperatures.

You haven't lived until you've worked with HMP solder.  Nasty stuff.

First time for me too, but the Hakko's are 1st rate.  When I arrived at 
this  company, they all used Weller irons.  Wow, do they suck for high 
temperature work.  The tips would literally be used up within 5 minutes! 
  It took a while to get the people to come around, but they all swear 
by the Hakko's now :)
