I agree it looks nicer, but  the transparency effects in GIT head
using GTK+GL do have the benefit of letting the user know that these
are not simple pads.  They /almost/ don't need to know, but it would
he helpful if they experience the unexpected behaviour of "snap to pad
center" when working with overlapping but misaligned pads.
