So I'm interesting in what happens here. I was planning to use an ACS712ELCTR-20A-T (it's 6.3VAC sitting about 100V above ground - so that fancy doodad kills a couple birds with one stone) but it's also somewhat spendy. How about something like DigiKey 408-1615-2-ND - 5m Ohm, 3W, 2512W, that should take care of your SMT issue. (When I saw TO220 I figured you were looking for a through hole device).
