I think the confusion is because the context in my patch already mentions another feature; in global.h unsigned char q; /* square geometry flag */ unsigned char int_conn_grp; are added for the special shaped pins and int_conn_grp is the internal connection group number. I don't think the patches I extract this simple way can be applied as-is, they probably need manual assistance - but all my whitespace and naming are off, so if you are going to use them you'll need to rewrite them anyway.
