Popularity doesn't measure power. The key thing to understand about open source development is that popularity *does* invoke development resources. The more popular a package is, the more talent it can draw from for further development. If the gEDA project doesn't get a larger core user base, resources to maintain it will wither, and eventually the gEDA project will die completely. At the moment, Kicad has a much larger user base, so they have the power to influence others. gEDA doesn't.
