For advanced users it may be ok to edit footprint and pcb files with an editor (I think it has not to be emacs). But we should not give beginners the feeling that this is the general mode of operation for gEDA/PCB. We have a few footprint generators and some commands from inside PCB program to modify properties -- for me that was enough, and I have to admit that I am not smart enough to create that files with an editor.
