A few minutes of research showed that fontconfig, which implements the font matching algorithm, has a nice FC_DEBUG environment variable that is useful. Try running gschem like this: FC_DEBUG=1 gschem The FC_DEBUG var is actually a bit mask, but value 1 is basic font matching debugging.
