I went back to www.delorie.com and used the zip picker instead of just getting the biggest number package. the zip picker says use bnu213b.zip (2.1.3) not bnu295.zip (2.9.5) apparently 2.9.5 is a beta release (incidentally if this situation can help the developer of this package, please let me know) once I use the right assembler everything seems to work just fine. thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
