Each zip file has a time stamp, so it should be very easy to know whether you need an update: just look at the *.zip files you have locally, and compare with what's on SimTel. Alternatively, make sure you download every package as soon as it is announced, and you will always have the latest binaries of everything. So what practical problems do you have? I fail to see the grave problems that would require such non-trivial changes. (The Mini-FAQ is maintained manually, which makes it a pain to add the info you are asking for.)
