My program uses fread() to read the binary COFF file into structs, then normal printf() to print the various fields onto the screen. I was getting some very strange output from my program, so I opened up the COFF file in a hex editor and compared the two files. The output was exactly as it should be until the byte 0x0d showed up in the COFF file. Then, the output was all shifted by 1 byte. It took me a while before it dawned on me that 0x0d is the newline character. It appears your implementation of fread() is skipping over newline characters when it shouldn't be - fread() should read raw binary data. I have tested this same program with egcs-1.1 under Linux and with gcc-2.95.2 under Solaris, and both times the output was correct. Attached is my source code (it only reads the first two headers of a COFF file at the moment) and two COFF (*.out) files.
