Two: 1) You have free access to the sources of every library and utility, and so can find out anything you need about their operation, and fix many bugs without relying on a vendor's good will. You can also freely discuss what you find in the sources with people who wrote that or understand what it does, and why. 2) You have support in this forum whose level is a pipe dream of any user of proprietary products.
