You could use some variable other than HOME for that.  For example,
SOURCES or some such.  Since no other application is likely to use
such a variable, you will be much safer than messing with HOME.  All
you pay is the need to define that variable on your Unix machine
(whereas HOME is already defined for you).  IMHO it's as small price
to pay for your sanity ;-)
