I have a SB PCI512, which has the same chip as the SB Live! (EMU10K1).
Allegro doesn't like it when you have an EMU10K1 chip and set your MIDI card
to raw SB, but it doesn't complain when using the MPU-401 driver.  At least,
that's what I've noticed.  Your mileage may vary.

As for porting games, I don't think you'll have that problem if you use the
MPU-401 driver.  The quality isn't up to snuff but it's decent enough to
warrant use.  In my opinion, anyway.  :)
