Hi! 
 Could you please post the output of
1. running "set" in the windows dos  prompt
2. running "set" when you restart into dos.

also 
1. the autoexec.bat while under windows
1. the autoexec.bat after a restart to DOS


I am a bit confused still about what you mean by restart into dos. If 
you do this by going through the (start menu->shutdown->restart 
the computer in ms dos mode) then somehow the DJGPP variables 
are removed from the environment. So if this is the case could you 
please post the output of the "c:\windows\dosstart.bat" file.
