I keep changing my mind!!! :) A part of me wants to develop my first REAL game using Windows and directx just so I will have a large target and make a million dollars. But, no matter how hard I try (not to mention all the money I have to spend) I keep wanting to come back to DOS. So, here is my question: Do you think it is a good idea to develop my first real game (a Metroid/type space, platformer) for DOS even though it might take a year? My logic is simple: Develop the game in DOS, distribute it and sell it pretty cheap (even though I hope it will have commercial quality). That way, I learn a LOT about game design and programming. If I make any kind of money then maybe move to Windows. Some of my biggest problems going to windows are: 1> Much more difficult to program (at least for an old DOS programmer) 2> No one writes "tight" code anymore. I want to develop a lot of my engine in ASM. 3> I don't care what anyone says, if you make a program for windows and dos, 9999 times out of 10000, the dos version will be much smoother than the windows version on the same machine. It's just easy logic, windows has a lot more overhead. Now, I didn't mean to start some flame war. Also, I guess the right thing to do is what feels best to me. I have never got up in the morning and couldn't wait to start programming MFC. DOS LIVES!!! :) Anyway, just wanted your opinion. -Chuck U. Farley
