I think there was intended to be a comma after "know"...

Yes, GAS is indeed Gnu ASsembler.  The name is based on a Unix tradition
of naming the assembler "as"; GNU just prefixed a G.  But it does make
an interesting acronym.  GASP, the GAS Preprocessor, is even better
name-wise.
