If not true, please correct. DOS is an independent operating system. Windows 3.1 (and before) is a graphical user interface dependent upon DOS. Windows 95 ++ is an independent operating system with added GUI features. (Windows 95 ++ is NOT a GUI dependent upon DOS.) Linux is a UNIX-like independent operating system, often packaged with added GUIs and other things, but not necessarily. A BASH/EMACS/DGJPP/DOS installation is a simulation of a normal UNIX operating system. It is dependent upon DOS, but in most aspects gives what I see when I call up Linux--of course I don't have the nice utilities and GUIs that normally come with Linux. When I hit bash [Enter] then Emacs [Enter] I enter a world much like Linux except I am still using DOS and don't have the many fine features for multi-tasking, and on-line work that Linux has. There is no intent to praise or disparage any of these systems, my only purpose is to see if I have it right. Any comment would be appreciated. Ralph
