By doing this, the compiler is more modular and can be extended much easier. gcc.exe is just a "driver" that runs the various programs: gcc cpp - preprocesses - handles includes, #ifdefs, etc. cc1/cc1plus/... - compiles C/C++ to assembler as - assembles into an object file ld - links object files together
