This has come up before, search the DJGPP mail archives at http://www.delorie.com/djgpp/mail-archives/ for "Thinkpad". As far as I remember, the reason was that Thinkpad loads some drivers for the PCMCIA cards. Somebody reported that removing those drivers from CONFIG.SYS solved the problems.
