If I am about to compile a file and want to type
gxx -c File.cpp

and accidentally type
gxx -o File.cpp

not only does djgpp respond with a message telling me something along the
line of undefined reference to main
BUT IT ERASES THE FILE!!!!!

Now, I understand that this is happening because it is trying to compile a
non-existent file into a file named File.cpp but this seem like a mistake
which could happen quite a lot and be very very costly (e.g. there goes my
homework).

Is this a DJGPP bug/feature or does it represent something weird with DOS
(Win95 Dos mode), and is there anyway to get around it (besides typing more
carefully)?
