That isn't true at all. Your information is completly inaccurate. We use 
RHIDE to debug a program that uses Allegro and it doesn't crash. You must be 
sure to disable the mouse to avoid problems, just disable it before the 
breakpoint.

RHIDE is the only way I know and works very well for us.
